Brazil’s Mid-Paraíba is a city-region located along the Paraíba do Sul river, a water source for 14 million Brazilians. The region consists of multiple urban centers, connected by their common infrastructure and prosperous industrial past. Today, however, the region’s trajectory and cohesion are challenged by an array of political, environmental, and economic complexities. Beyond discrete urban sites, this vacancy also manifests at a regional scale: CSN - the steel company - owns a linear right of way: a former passenger rail that today lies unused. This continuous ‘site’ is not only a vivid reminder of the region’s industrial past, but also represents a potential mechanism for a new regional connectivity.
